Arrive within the first 1-2 hours of a market for the best selection and freshest produce. This is especially important on hot days or holidays.

Bring your own bags, a mix of large re-useable bags, and smaller muslin or plastic bags for delicate or messy items.

Have plenty of cash on hand. Most vendors don’t accept credit cards and are sometimes reluctant to take checks.

Ask questions! Remember that just because you’re buying it at a farmers market doesn’t mean it was grown locally or grown by that person! Always ask questions about the things that are important to you, i.e. Did you grow this? Is it locally grown? Is it organic? What variety is it? When was it picked? What is the best use for this vegetable?

-If the farmer doesn’t know the answer to some of these questions, it is likely they didn’t grow the item.

Be prepared for the weather and/or a hike to and from your car, especially if you arrive during peak hours.

Sign up for your market’s email updates or check their websites for the latest information. If you’re planning meals in advance and are unsure what you’ll find, this is especially helpful.
