Due to all the extra planting, building and general maintenance we’ve been doing I’ve been unable to respond to emails or post anything. Also, our phone and internet have been on the fritz for about a week. Many apologies to those who have emailed us recently, I will be getting back to everyone as soon as possible.

So what’s all this stuff that’s also been taking me away from the farm? Planting of course! Flowers, tomatoes, potatoes, beans carrots, radishes and many other numerous crops have all been planted recently. We’re still waiting for the rain to subside before we even attempt to plant the eggplant and peppers. We’ve also been weeding up a storm; thanks to our great crew the lettuce and beets are now weed free. But, as always, there are still plenty of weeds to be dealt with.

In addition to the weeding and planting, we’ve also been finishing greenhouses and outbuildings and trying to repair the many things that always seem to break just before we need them. A friend also got our largest tractor stuck in a very wet part of our farm, which then set us back by a few days.

All of this then leads up to an important decision about the CSA. After a lot of consideration we’ve decided to push the CSA back by two weeks. We basically just want to make sure that there is enough of everything to go around for those first few weeks.

The first week of CSA is now the week of June 27 and the last week is the week of October 31. We’re sorry if this causes any inconveniences, just email us if you need to make any arrangements.

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Tomato Festival on Sunday. The crowd was a little smaller than expected- but since it was just Paul and myself to run everything, it was probably better that way.

For those who didn’t make it out, we let everyone into the raspberry and strawberry patches to pick, pick pick! There was also a lot of basil to be harvested, and almost everyone who wanted went home with enough basil for a big batch of pesto!

From the tomato tasting we learned that “Black Prince” (a black tomato) was the favorite. Last year it was Black fro Tula, another obviously dark variety- so there must be something special about the deep rich colors.

Some other notables were Green Zebra, Garden Peach and Red Brandywine! We’ll use the information about the likes and dislikes of the varieties to choose what we grow next year.

Two of the newest additions to the farm line-up are kohlrabi and fennel. Both of these vegetables have seemed to excite some and befuddle others. Kohlrabi is a relative of cabbage which gives it that sweet flavor, and sort of a cooling, watery sensation on the tongue. It’s best in the fall and when it’s young, but can also be eaten in stir-fries or just as a steamed vegetable.

Fennel, however is still a mystery to me. It seems to me in a class all it’s own, and has no known relatives in its genus. There are two types of fennel though , the bulbing and the non-bulbing type. Obviously we have the bulbing type, which lends a sweet licorice flavor to any dish. I love it roasted whole, but it’s also nice gently cooked in a gratin with other veggies, which helps to subdue the flavor.

I forgot to tell everyone who picked up their shares about what some of them might find in the lettuce mix today. By the title of the post you might have guessed… pea greens.

They might look like common weeds but they’ll add a light pea flavor to your salads. The 2nd leaves of the tendril can be a little tough, but are usually fairly tender. Many plants can actually be eaten when young, and a lot of flowers are also excellent in salads… but we don’t include the really weird things in our salad mixes.

So when you open up your salad mixes today don’t throw out the curly light green pieces, they’re not weeds- just baby pea greens that will pleasantly surprise you.

Check your schedules the CSA begins this week! Ordinarily I would email everyone- but since that won’t be happening- remind your friends and co-workers that this Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday you have to pick up some veggies!!!

What do you need at the first distribution?

-BAGS or boxes or a basket. We usually supply some plastic bags, but it’s always nice if you have a re-useable bag handy too.

- Your name and the name of your share partner (if applicable). If you split a share the membership might be under the other person’s name, so try to give us both names.

-A sense of adventure! There may be things there that you don’t recognize- and as usual, what you receive the first week is always a little sparse, so just be aware of the seasonality of vegetables.

I will try to have a list of veggies before distribution but no promises- good luck!

If you’d still like to get into the CSA, please send in your information by this Thursday, May 15. I will accept a few late people if you email me- but we’re getting really full!

Thanks to all those who signed up early. Very soon you’ll be receiving information about your distribution location times and a few other extra distribution locations. We’re hoping to establish another distribution in East Lansing (if the City of East Lansing is kind ) and also another in Mason, at a very gracious member’s house.

Also, I Rebecca, will not be around for the first 2 weeks of distribution- thus email communication will be limited in the next few weeks (from about May 24- June 14). So be expecting most of your information to come before those days. However, I’m still planning on updating the blog during that time- so check it!

(I’ll be in France, touring farms and tasting wine- a graduation gift to myself)
