I always forget that the scape looks like some alien vegetable to people… That and the kohlrabi of course… but Erica, a CSA member sent me this awesome link to an article in the Washington post. It gives a short anatomy lesson and some ideas/recipes. I’ve made garlic pesto before (not with the walnuts as called for here) but I highly recommend it. Enjoy them why you can!

We harvested our first 10 quarts of strawberries yesterday! They look and taste fantastic.

Thank goodness the rain has held off as well- we’ll be able to plant almost everything by Saturday.
CSA is almost here as well- so I’ll try to keep on top of the emails and calls, but no guarantees- the season has begun and we’re as busy as ever!
After a little too much rain in April, the ground has finally dried enough to plant! A few of our early brassicas have been in for about 2-3 weeks, along with lettuce, carrots, beets, early turnips and radishes. We’ve also planted way more potatoes than usual. And the spring peas are up nicely and will be flowering soon.
All of our tomatoes will be going into the ground next week along with many other of the solanaceous plants. Now we just await the arrival of our sweet potatoes, and more warm weather.
Still, we’re a little behind where we usually are because of the rains. Hopefully the CSA will start on time- but you never know :/. We’ve got a lot planned and if the weather to continues to cooperate it still looks to be a good spring.
Have a good memorial day! We’ll be at the Dansville Memorial Day Parade (usually starts after the 5k is done- about 11:30)!
Please forgive the slow response to emails and other news. Rebecca has hurt her back rather badly and has been just barely mobile for the last week, and has seen no improvement.
Again, we’re sorry if this causes any problems, but we’ll do our best to keep up with your emails and questions.
IF you are in immediate need of assistance please call the farm at 517. 589-5543
Due to an overwhelming last-minute response from the community, CSA sign-up will be closed May 1. If you’d like to be on the waiting list for next year please email us at rebecca at titusfarms dot com.
Thanks to the over 200 people in the community who have decided to support a local farm and receive fresh vegetables this summer. We’ll see you in June!
So… I wasn’t very good about reminding people of the deadline via email, as I should have been. And people are a little stressed right now due to the upcoming tax deadline.
So- for those frantic prospective CSA members- don’t worry! Email me at rebecca at titusfarms.com as soon as possible and I can see what we can do. Every site still has spots available, some more than others. We usually like to have everyone signed up by May 1- but even after that is sometimes ok.
Good luck with those taxes!
Well it’s not quite spring yet, especially since the local meteorologist is predicting a nasty cold snap. However, you wouldn’t know it when you step into the greenhouse. Little plants are popping up everywhere and are looking good. Our beekeeper also just brought out two new hives of healthy bees. So with the winter rye showing its green leaves and the bees happily buzzing it almost feels like spring.
If you’re a really avid gardener, now is the time to start some of your warm season plants inside the house, so they’ll be ready to plant out by Memorial Day. If you’re not, then come to the farmers market in about a month to get the best selection.
And if you don’t want to put up with gardening at all- then join our CSA! (www.titusfarms.com/CSA). We still have a few spots available, and if you’re a returning member please remember that you’re application is still due by APRIL 15! This is a month earlier than usual (but it helps us plan our production better). We’re especially looking for people in our local area (Leslie, Dansville and Mason)! Thanks!
Thanks to all the MOPS groups for having Titus Farms as their guest! MOPS or Mothers of Preschoolers is an international organization helping as a support for mothers of young children (www.mops.org). We met some very nice, and very busy ladies this week!
We’re always glad to see mothers interested in having their children eat more healthily and even locally.
Don’t forget that CSA sign-up ends on APRIL 15!!! If you’re interested email Rebecca at rebecca@titusfarms.com and send in those membership forms asap. If you’re waiting for a tax return, and you don’t think it’ll be in by April 15, please email us and we’ll see what we can work out.
Spring break at MSU is any but a restful time for many of those involved in agriculture. It is, of course, ANR (Agriculture and Natural Resources) Week on campus. This means there are a wealth of information for farmers and food advocates alike in the form of classes and seminars, which can be expensive- but not always.
Still, if you’re passionate about any quirky agricultural subject from beekeeping, wildflowers to cheese making, check out some of the things going on at MSU. Check out the link. My personal favorite is the Michigan Organic Conference at the Kellogg Center- there’s even a film festival and a mixer (featuring organic and michigan ales) at the end of the sessions.
Thanks to the Lansing Jaycees for inviting to their monthly meeting. We had no idea how involved these 21-40 year olds were involved in the the community! Check out their website for more information www.lansingjaycees.org/
All I can say is that I hope more people follow the example and become proud supporters of their communities.
If you know of any groups that you think would be interested in hearing about local food or CSA participation contact us!
